Dreamt up by Theo Kelsey-Verdecchia, the Golden Horseshoe Race is a new event that aims to take riders through the best and most remote riding that Southern Ontario has to offer. Over the 1,650-kilometer course, riders are promised to encounter everything from groomed singletrack, pristine pavement, and Cadillac gravel, to overgrown ATV trails, riverbeds, creek crossings, and long-forgotten roads. Twenty brave riders started from Brockton Cyclery in Toronto on September 17th, and as of today, eight riders have already dropped out.

Last week, with a time of 5 days, 7 hours, and 53 minutes, Felix Laberge became the first person ever to finish the Golden Horseshoe Race, setting both an overall and singlespeed fastest known time. Earlier this year, Felix took first place at Ontario’s Log Driver’s Waltz, completing the 800-kilometer route in 1 day, 20 hours, and 24 minutes, which was also good enough for a singlespeed FKT. He has a few other impressive finishes under his belt, and we’re excited to see what he decides to tackle next.

From the beginning, Felix rode a commanding ride, his pace uncontested. Sleeping just enough to keep moving forward and resupplying with incredible efficiency, Felix managed to keep his stopped time under 15 hours for the entire 1,650-kilometer race. He said he enjoyed the course and was especially grateful to have a suspension fork for the chunky trails and technical descents. He had excellent luck with animal sightings, including three moose, a wolf, and several coyotes. He even got a glimpse of the northern lights on his third night out.

Congratulations on an incredible performance, Felix! For more, Theo and the Golden Horseshoe team are providing excellent ever coverage over on their Instagram page, and you can follow the riders live from our event page.
