Closing out the month of July, we’re sharing a look back at another weekend full of summery rides and campouts in the Northern Hemisphere. Today’s Weekend Snapshot finds us in the Colorado Rockies, Vancouver Island on Canada’s West Coast, and Germany’s Lower Saxony, where we meander through a trio of unique backyards that abound with bikepacking potential. Find all three below, followed by a quick form you can use to share an image from one of your recent rides plus a handful of our favorite routes in the regions highlighted in today’s post.

British Columbia

Earlier this month, I set off on my first solo bikepacking trip, following the Tree to Sea Loop on North Vancouver Island. I’m not sure what pushed me to do this, other than the feeling that I should to make the most of my summer off from teaching. Though I decided to leave out the “solo” part of the trip from my parents until I arrived home safe and sound, completing a longer trip alone gave me the time and space to make the loop my own. I took detours I likely wouldn’t have done with others, forced myself to chat more with strangers, and slowly got over my fear of cougars attacking from behind. I was free to take as many breaks as I wanted, eat Snickers bars for all meals, and belt out pop songs by memory for hours on end.

Crested Butte, Colorado

Having recently moved to Colorado, I spent a long weekend enjoying my first visit to the beautiful towns of Crested Butte and Gunnison, where I got to soak in a few nights outside, hang out with our own Neil Beltchenko, and get a peek at the stunning Hartman Rocks area (our overnighter route is linked below). I’m already looking forward to another visit in the fall!

Niedersachsen, Germany

Out for an overnighter in the Lüneburger Heide. It rained a lot, so there were hardly any people on the tracks. The heather bloom starts soon, and the fields will soon shine in a beautiful purple color. It was nice together lost so easily on a weekend in the middle of Germany.
